I'll never forget the first time I saw or heard anything from Kaizers Orchestra, it was so overwhelming, I still did not overcome it.
It was a hot thursday afternoon in the end of June, I was 14 year old, had just received my school report and was for the first time attending the biggest musical festival of Belgium, Rock Werchter. I went because I was a huge fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who would play a terrible set in the evening.
Since it was so hot, we were looking for some shadow to cool down and relax. In front of the Pyramid Marquee, the second stage of Rock Werchter based in a tent, there were some tree's, were we found some space, so we settled ourselves there. Five minutes later the screen from the Marquee flashed on and showed us a guy with a gas mask and an accordion, who stumbled on stage, I was immediately sold for the band. For me as a 14 year old kid, the whole performance they set was fantastic, a guy with a gas mask, a singer who beats savagely on an oil barrel and a drummer with a high Lincoln hat. And of course, the music they played was so wonderful, that I didn't listened to anything else then Kaizers Orchestra for the rest of the summer.
Since they didn't break through in Belgium, I lost track of Kaizers Orchestra, until I was doing some research for school one or two years ago, and saw that they would play a small gig in Brussels, where I was studying. The few memories I had from them came back to me, and I listened to their newest albums and once more, I became addicted to Kaizers Orchestra, so I went to the gig. It was an amazing gig, with no more than one hundred spectators, but enough energy to power the entire city. Up until now, I'm still high from their performance!
I hope they will once come back to Belgium, 'cause they're still one of the best live-performing bands I've ever seen (and I think I can say I have seen a lot, 'cause I work and attend most of the big Belgian festivals, and Pinkpop, already for eight years)
Thanks for enlightening my life!
